Conceived as a stack of “Living Slabs,” Shiv Kunj is an eight-storey multi-generational residence in Juhu, Mumbai, that reinterprets the relationship between urban living and nature. Developed on a narrow residential plot, the project responds to the challenges of density, climate and contemporary family life by creating a series of alternating simplex and duplex homes connected through generous terraces and planted edges.
The architecture is defined by an integrated façade system where screens, perforations, sliding panels and openings work together to create a layered environmental skin. This moderates sunlight, coastal breezes and monsoon rains while fostering a comfortable microclimate throughout the building. Extensive planting along every level transforms the structure into a vertical landscape, allowing greenery and architecture to mature together over time.
Drawing inspiration from Bombay’s tradition of balconies and outdoor living, Shiv Kunj offers an alternative to conventional residential towers—one that prioritises connection to nature, individual identity and a richer, more humane urban experience.
