There are places where architecture is not imposed upon the land, but discovered within it.
This house is imagined as the basalt bluff continuing its slow geological journey, momentarily softening into a place to inhabit. Cast in concrete made from powdered basalt, the material returns to its own origin, allowing the rock to grow into architecture rather than merely support it.
The house is neither excavated nor constructed. It is revealed, as though the hill had liquefied for an instant before settling once again into permanence.
Light enters where the stone yields. Gardens occupy the pauses between mass. Water, moss and time slowly reclaim the surfaces, blurring the distinction between cliff and dwelling until the two become inseparable.
Published extensively over the years, the project has remained relevant not because of novelty, but because it resists fashion. It proposes that architecture need not compete with the landscape. It can simply become its next geological layer.
